Can you believe summer is flying by already? For kids especially, these precious warm weather months are jam-packed with memories. It’s a time of growth and change. As a mom, you might be feeling like you don’t want to miss a single moment of this stage!

I am right there with you. Documenting the day-to-day activities of family life has been a game-changer for us.  The good news is you don’t need a big fancy camera to capture quality photos of your kids’ childhoods. In my Momtog Course, I teach you how to be your kids' mamarazzi and take photos at the moment so you never forget moments like your baby’s first tooth or your oldest’s first day of high school. You can learn more about the course here.

Since summer is in full swing, I thought it’d be helpful to highlight a few summer activities that you’ll want to document this season! Here are eight summer photo opportunities to be on the lookout for:

Beach and Water Play

Being in the water is so much fun for kids of all ages. I don’t know about your crew, but mine loves to swim and splash, whether it’s at the beach, lake, swimming pool, or water park. Take a few posed photos if you can, but mainly try to capture the joy of your kids just having fun.

Sports and Activities

Summer is the time for sports! Maybe that means your kids participate in a summer baseball program, or maybe it’s just a few evenings where you set up a family trip to the local tennis courts. Capture the fun of lighthearted competition and the joy of shared interests.

Family Reunions

You could easily fill up your camera roll with all the potential photo ops from family reunions. They are so much fun! Try to get a variety of poses, backgrounds, and subjects. This could be anything from your kids smiling with their grandparents to making crafts with their cousins.

Family Fun Days

Whether you’ve planned a trip to the amusement park, a local library, or a family bike ride, be sure to snap photos along the way. Look for moments when each of your kids is invested in what they’re doing, and take individual pictures of them, alongside the group shots.

Festive Events

There are so many magical summertime events to attend, like parades, 4th of July Fireworks, or state fairs. Because they’re usually a once-a-season type of activity, there is usually so much anticipation and excitement surrounding them. As you’re taking pictures, focus on the candid moments where your kids are soaking up every moment.

Special Outfits

Documenting your family all dressed up in themed clothes is a must-do. When everyone is wearing coordinating red/white/blue shirts, matching Disneyland hats, or even dressy wedding attire, it’s a perfect time to pull out your camera.

Camping and Outdoor Adventures

Whether you’re a family who camps often or once-a-year outdoorsy people, be sure to capture your adventures! Your kids will love looking back at their time in the great outdoors in the years to come.

Family Activities

The everyday moments with your family can end up being some of your favorite memories to look back on. Don’t overlook simple activities like reading books together, making crafts, or fun piggyback rides from Dad when he gets home from work.

As you’re on the lookout for photos to capture for your family, be sure to focus more on the moments you’re sharing with your kids, and less on how it will look on camera. You’re documenting real life, after all! Don’t let the lack of a fancy camera keep you from documenting cherished memories with your loved ones. I hope these ideas are helpful!
