Family Photos Success: Tips for Finding the Perfect Look for Mom
Let’s talk about Mom, the unsung hero of family photo sessions. She is typically the one who schedules the appointments, gets everyone else looking their best, and makes sure they’re at the session on time! When mom is so focused on taking care of the entire family, it can be hard for her to find time for herself. So here is one of my greatest family photo session tips: make time for Mom!
Outfit
When mom is feeling her best, everyone else tends to follow suit. Moms, go ahead and choose your outfit first. The mom’s outfit is usually the most difficult to find, so choose your outfit early on and then coordinate everyone else’s outfits from there.
You will want to keep your outfit flowy so that you can feel comfortable and look like your regular, happy self in your family photos. I will always recommend dresses as the best way to achieve this, but you could also try a flowy top, maybe something with flowy sleeves. As far as color goes, aim for something neutral to match the landscape. Be sure to try your outfit on many times before picture day to ensure that it’s a winner.
Some of my favorite stores for women’s clothing are Amazon, Target, Roolee, and Bohme.
Hair and Makeup
Plan ahead and have your hair cut or colored a few days before your family session. I recommend having your hair and makeup professionally done on the day of the session. Not only will you look great, but you will feel pampered and relaxed going into the session. If a hair and makeup artist isn’t an option, feel free to find some tutorials online and practice contoring and highlighting. Don’t experiment with new styles on the day of your session! You’ll be stressed if it doesn’t work and you have to start all over! Ultimately you want to look like yourself in your photos, so stick to your regular routine with maybe a little extra foundation and l swear by fake lashes.
Accessories
Keep the accessories simple so that the eye is drawn to sweet connections like kisses, snuggles, and handholding rather than sparkle. I love Made by Mary accessories for their slim and simple jewelry designs. They even have several pieces for moms, such as their gorgeous birth flower collection.
Shoes
Wear shoes you’ve tried before and could break out in a run if necessary. Wedges, boots, ballet flats, and other sturdy yet stylish shoes make for good options. Depending on your outfit, your shoes will probably not be noticed as much as other aspects of your ensemble, but that doesn’t mean you can’t find a pair that makes you feel beautiful. If you are doing a beach or grass session, you may even want to go barefoot!
The most important thing for moms to remember when searching for the perfect outfit is that there is no such thing as perfection. It is easy to put off family photos until you are in better shape or the kids are easier to handle. There will always be another excuse. Just book the session! I promise that your family adores you and wants to remember you right now as you are.
PS: See those photos of me and my kids? They were taken by the amazing Amber Beasley. If you’re In the Charleston area, I recommend her 100%!
