My Best Tips for Choosing Outfits for Family Pictures
Family photos are a wonderful way to capture the memories of your growing family. Last month, we shared tips for choosing a family photo outfit for mom. I always recommend that mom choose her outfit first because she is the centerpiece of the family; she lays the foundation for everyone else's outfits. Today we are talking about how to choose outfits for the rest of the family.
If you're wondering what to wear for your next family photo shoot, here are a few tips:
Mom's outfit sets the tone.
Mom’s outfit sets the tone—if mom is in a dress, you might consider the girls in dresses too, and the men in khakis or another dress pant. However, if mom has a dressy top and nice jeans, you can use that to guide your choices for the other family members.
After you’ve decided what style of dress you want everyone in (classy/dressy, nice casual, etc.), look at the colors. List the visible colors of mom’s outfit that will be noticeable on camera, and dress everyone else in those colors. If mom’s dress has small green accents, a child wearing green will create a visual connection to tie them into that dress pattern and can highlight the child as a focal point in a photo.
Choose a color palette.
One of the best ways to coordinate your family's outfits for family photos is to choose a color palette. This doesn't mean that everyone has to wear the same color. It means that you have a group of colors that work well together that you are basing everyone’s outfits off of.
When choosing a color palette, consider the location of your shoot and the time of year. If you are shooting outdoors in the fall, you should avoid matching the background with browns and oranges. I am always a fan of neutrals, as long as you are not blending into the scenery behind you.
Consider the occasion.
What type of family photo shoot are you having? Is it a formal shoot or a more casual one? The occasion will help determine the appropriate level of formality for your outfit.
For a formal shoot, you may want to choose a dressy dress or a skirt and blouse. For a casual shoot, you may want to choose jeans and a nice top, or a sundress.
Do not match.
Please do not wear matching outfits. It may sound like a sweet idea, but a group of people wearing the same outfit tends to blend together in photos. Children, in particular, should be in outfits that complement each other but do not match. Family photos are a great opportunity to let the kids choose some aspects of their own outfits. They will feel so proud when they see the outfit that they chose in the photos!
Don't forget the accessories.
Accessories can add a touch of personality to your family photos. A statement necklace, a pair of earrings, or a scarf can really elevate your look.
When choosing accessories, be sure to choose items that complement your outfit. You don't want to overwhelm your look with too many accessories.
If you're not sure what to wear for your next family photo shoot, start by choosing an outfit that you feel comfortable and confident in. The rest of your family will likely follow suit.
