Fail-Proof Colors for Stunning Cherry Blossom Pictures
Planning your outfits
The most common question I get as a photographer is: What should we wear??
Planning outfits is one of the most stressful parts of getting family pictures done. So stressful, in fact, that there are plenty of people who forgo getting pictures done at all because they don’t want to deal with the wardrobe!
Every single one of my clients gets a complimentary style guide that walks them through the whole outfit planning process (you can grab a style guide freebie here). But if you’re curious about what kinds of colors really pop against those fluffy blooms, here are some colors I whole-heartedly recommend to act as inspiration in your ensembles:
Baby Blue - baby blue looks great on a wide variety of skin tones and is a great compliment to the pinks and whites found in the blossoms.
White - If you want light, bright, timeless, and fresh-looking photos - white is a great option. The only caution is if you have fair skin, white clothes with white blossoms can really wash you out. If that’s the case, cream or off-white can give the same feel without draining you of color.
Pink - A pretty blush pink color warms up faces and is a fun color that really screams spring. Be careful not to go brighter than the flowers, you want to complement - not compete.
Soft Green - lighter greens (like mint) are a great choice because of all the greens that come with spring.
Lavender - Purple has always been a color used by royalty and I stand by it! Lavender is such a regal and classic color to use and it looks fabulous against those white flowers!
Yellow/Orange - These may come as a surprise but a pastel orange or yellow can add a really pretty pop against the blush and creams of cherry blossoms. The trick is to use these as an accent.
You can check out most (if not all) of these colors in action in the photo gallery below. While there is definitely a time and place for moody, muted tones, spring is the time of year to really lean on those softer hues and lighter materials. Textures like linen and lace also really shine during springtime shoots, especially where cherry blossoms are involved. As far as patterns go, It’s totally possible to pull off wearing a small floral or pinstripe print. Just remember the key is subtlety! A pattern that is too flashy or bright can distract from the beauty of the location.
If you’re still feeling overwhelmed by the prospect of finding outfits for your whole crew, my best tip is to start with yourself first. Grab a top or dress in a fun spring color that you love wearing, then build the rest of the outfits around that item. Try to pick something that others in your group might have chosen themselves. I always recommend wearing something that YOU feel comfortable in. At the end of the day, your own confidence is what will shine through in your photos!
